Dental technicians may assist dentists in practice
De Commissie Volksgezondheid van de Kamer van Volksvertegenwoordigers heeft een wetsvoorstel goedgekeurd dat het mogelijk maakt voor tandtechnici om aanwezig te zijn in een tandartspraktijk om de tandarts bij te staan. De tekst, ingediend door CD&V-fractieleider Raf Terwingen, wijzigt een Koninklijk Besluit uit 1943, dat het “onbevoegde personen” verbood om de praktijk te betreden wanneer er een patiënt aanwezig was. Volgens Terwingen is dit verbod al lang niet meer in overeenstemming met de moderne praktijk.
According to Terwingen, the ban has long been out of line with modern practice. In concrete terms, the seventy-year-old Royal Decree stipulates that access to premises where a patient is present is reserved for dental licentiates and doctors in medicine, surgery and obstetrics and holders of a certificate of competence. Access is therefore prohibited for all other unauthorized persons.
“Vandaag is er veel vooruitgang geboekt op het gebied van tandheelkunde, met name op het vlak van tandtechniek en tandprotheses,” zegt Terwingen. Hij stelt dat de aanwezigheid van een tandtechnicus “onmisbaar” is, vooral bij hoogtechnologische ingrepen.
Het probleem is dat tandtechnici – en in het algemeen mensen die implantaten en protheses vervaardigen in tandlabo’s – niet noodzakelijk een masterdiploma of een diploma in de tandheelkunde hebben.
